When S&B, a leading Greek multinational industrial minerals company, was faced with the perception that mining undermined the tourism potential of the island of Milos, we developed Miloterranean, a pioneering tourism initiative that celebrated the island’s unique geological landscape and centuries-old mining heritage. The project repositioned mining from a perceived obstacle into a distinctive tourism asset, creating an authentic visitor experience rooted in the island’s identity.
By demonstrating that responsible mining and sustainable tourism can thrive together, Miloterranean helped bridge the gap between the company and the local community, fostering trust, strengthening stakeholder engagement, and creating shared value for the island.
Miloterranean won multiple awards, including Silver Award – Tourism Awards 2014 and 1st Prize – Bravo Society, 2017, and brought international recognition to S&B as a pioneer in integrating mining, tourism, and community engagement. Following S&B’s acquisition by Imerys in 2015, the program’s success led the Group to replicate the concept in several other locations.
